About the exhibition

Following the groundbreaking exhibition Time Warp: Contemporary Textiles of the Northwest Coast mounted by  the Bill Reid Gallery in 2010-11, we are pleased to introduce Kwakwaka’wakw-Haida textile artist Meghann  O’Brien and her first solo international exhibition: Journeying Into Form: The Mountain Goat Wool Project. Curated by the
artist under the guidance of Martine Reid, Bill Reid Gallery’s Director of Content and Research, Journeying Into Form documents the transformation
of raw, unshorn
mountain goat pelts with guard hairs into  pure white cloud-like balls of drafted wool, which are then thigh-spun into weft yarn. This was a journey that has  transformed Meghann and her work. She discovered the world of the mountain goat and the real and symbolic  qualities of the animal and its wool, in her words “the essence of what the robes are made of.” The exhibition will  tour to France, where Meghann will participate in the International Festival of Extraordinary Textiles (FITE) in  Clermont-Ferrand (Sept 12-16, 2012).



About the artist

Born and raised in Alert Bay, BC, Meghann O’Brien began weaving in 2007, inspired by mentors Kerri Dick, Donna Cranmer, and Beau Dick. In 2009, she was introduced to Raven’s Tail weaving and apprenticed under Sherry Dick and William White. She now lives in Prince Rupert, and is rediscovering the ancient technique of  spinning mountain-goat wool exclusively by hand for Raven’s Tail and Naaxiin (Chilkat) weaving.

Nuit Européenne des Musées / European Night of Museums

Dans le cadre de la huitième édition de la Nuit Européenne des Musées, 1355 visiteurs ont pu rencontrer près de trente tricoteuses, tricoteurs, crocheteurs et crocheteurs invités par le musée Bargoin de la Ville de Clermont-Ferrand.

Les tricoteurs du café des Augustes et HS_Projets ont ainsi pu présenter les différents projets en cours de réalisation pour la première édition du FITE. Les visiteurs les plus hardis se sont même essayés aux aiguilles et crochets dans une ambiance conviviale.

During the eighth edition of the European Night of Museums, 1355 visitors were able to meet nearly thirty knitters, knitters and crocheters invited by the Bargoin museum of the City of Clermont-Ferrand.

Knitters of café des Augustes were able to present the various projects underway for the first edition of FITE. Visitors boldest have even try to needles and crochet in a friendly atmosphere.

Ce 14 mai 2012, HS_Projets à été reçu à Rougnat dans la Creuse par la filature Fonty, désormais partenaire du Festival International des Textiles Extra ordinaires et de ses projets tricotés, par un important don de matière première.

Les tricoteurs et tricoteuses connaissaient déjà la qualité des produits de cette filature française qui est la seule à teindre ses matières.

Crée en 1880, la société Fonty fournit de grandes maisons telles que la tapisserie d’Aubusson, la Manufacture Royale du Parc et possède 250 points de vente en Europe aux USA et en Russie.  Composée de 16 salariés cette filature se situe entre l’artisanat et la petite industrie proposant à ses clients des produits sur-mesure et de se fournir directement auprès d’elle. Ainsi tout à chacun peut demander à créer ses propres couleurs en petite quantité de matière.

 La démarche de Fonty est également écologique, en cherchant à développer les liens locaux proposant un circuit court du producteur à l’industriel, à l’artisan, et au commerçant. La filature  favorise dans ces produits les matières naturelles : laine, coton et lin.

De manière plus concrète, Fonty propose actuellement de réimplanter des troupeaux de mouton noir de race Merino Preto en provenance du Portugal. Ce projet transversal entre agriculture, industrie, et pédagogie permettra d’acquérir un troupeau, de le faire élever auprès de producteurs creusois et de réduire l’impact environnemental de la teinture désormais inutile.

This May 14, HS_Projets has been received in Rougnat  (Creuse) by Fonty, now partner of the International Festival of Extra ordinary Textiles and its knitted projects, with a large donation of raw material.

Knitters knew the quality product of this French spinning, the only dye their materials.

Created in 1880, the Fonty company provides prestigious houses such as Aubusson tapestry, the Manufacture Royale du Parc and has 250 outlets in Europe, in the USA and Russia. Composed of 16 employees that spinning is between crafts and small industry. So while everyone can create their own colors in small quantities of material.

Fonty's approach is also environmentally friendly, seeking to develop local links offering a short link between the industrial producer, the artisan and the merchant. Spinning promotes these products in natural materials: wool, cotton and linen.
More concretely, Fonty want to relocate flocks of black sheep bred Merino Preto from Portugal. The project cross between agriculture, industry, and education will acquire a herd, to do with raising Creuse producers and reduce the environmental impact of dyeing now useless.
