Tapa d'Océanie/Tapa barkcloth from Pacific

Dans la cadre de l'exposition "Tapa d'Océanie et écorces d'Afrique centrale" présentée à la galerie Showroom au 7 place Gailleton jusqu'au 25 mars, nous vous proposons sur le blog un rendez-vous régulier à la découverte des tapa d'Océanie.

Ce tapa, aux teintes brunes, est constitué d'un décor de bandes longitudinales parallèles et alternées. Les motifs à l'intérieur de chaque bande sont dit en "ribambelle" ou en "farandole", spécificité de Fidji. Ces motif sont réalisés et reproduits au pochoir comme les décors de traits des cotés. 

Dans le passé, les pochoirs étaient réalisés en feuilles d'arbre et aujourd'hui en film photo, ou en radiographie, ce qui donne au décors des bords plus nets et plus réguliers.

Simon Kooijmann, dans son ouvrage Tapa on Moce Island, Fiji: a Traditional Handicraft in a changing Society, décrit en détail le processus de fabrication et de décors. Quelques pages de l'ouvrage sont consultables sur googlebooks.

For the exhibition "Painting bark from Pacific and central Africa", from 5th to 25th march, in the Showroom Galerie 7 place Gailleton, we offer you to discover tapa barkcloth from Paicifc with many blog post.

This tapa barkcloth, with brown tones, has a decor of parallel and alternating longitudinal stripes. The patterns within each band are specificity of Fiji. These grounds are made and produced stencil, as traits around.

In the past, the stencils were made of tree leaves and now film photo, or X-ray, which gives the clearer and more regular edges.

Simon Kooijmann, in his book Tapa on Moce Island, Fiji: a Traditional Handicraft in a changing Society, describe in details process from making and decor of this type of tapa. Many pages of the book are available on googlebooks.
